*Manual Therapy or (Manipulative Therapy)

This is a hands on approach in mobilising joints and muscles in order to restore range of movement and reduce pain.  This treatment can be very gentle or quite vigorous depending on the condition being treated.

At Swansea Physiotherapy we use the Maitland Concept and Mulligan Techniques. For further explanations see links:  www.bmulligan.com

 www.imta.ch/maitlandcocept

*Sports Taping

At Swansea Physiotherapy we use both rigid and dynamic tape.  Rigid tape (eg sports tape) is used to stabilise joints and muscles.  The tissues are held in a corrected position so the client can perform their exercises pain free.

Dynamic tape provides light support and assists the client in their movement.  Clients are some times instructed in taping themselves to reduce the risk of re-injury.

*Exercise Prescription

Each client and every condition requires a specific exercise prescription or program.

This may include stretches for tight structures, strengthening for weak muscles or balance stimulation.

At Swansea Physiotherapy our experience with Iyengar Yoga and Pilates often influences the types of exercise we prescribe.

For example Low back pain may require core stabilisation ie: strengthening of specific abdominal and spinal muscles.

This may be accompanied by stretches for lower limb muscles and attention to posture.

Neck and shoulder conditions require attention to posture.  A primary exercise would be to stand with the back to the wall maintaining length through the neck and spine.

*Electrotherapy

Interferential and therapeutic ultrasound may be used to reduce pain and swelling.

*Synthetic Casting and Cast Removal

At Swansea Physiotherapy we are equipped to apply synthetic  casts to the lower and upper limbs.

We also have cast boots, crutches and cam boots in stock.

*Splinting

Heat moulded splints are used to immobilise and rest the hand and wrist.  This can be effective in the management of teno synovitis, osteo arthritis, thumb sprain and post operative conditions.

*Orthotic Prescription

We have a range of orthotics in stock.  However most orthotics are ordered after careful assessment  and measurement by the Physiotherapist.  They can usually be fitted within one or two working days.  We have Cam Boot Walkers and crutches available for purchase or hire.

*Lymphoedema Management

Lymphoedema is a build up of swelling in the tissues caused by a disruption of the effective drainage of this fluid via the Lymphatic System.
This disruption can be caused by either a Primary problem eg: vessels not formed properly from birth or Secondary ie: damage to the vessels or nodes from surgery or injury.

Lymphoedema if not well managed can be progressive and can interfere with usual functional activities and impact greatly on quality of life.
The management of Lymphoedema involves support from a qualified Lymphoedema Therapist in the form of education and importantly the teaching of self management skills. Treatment involves Manual Lymphatic Drainage massage, Compression in the form of garments or Multi- layer Bandaging, skin care advice and appropriate exercises.

Well managed Lympohoedema can greatly improve enjoyment in everyday life.
